1 Samuel 14:36 meaning

Saul is determined to utilize the night to press his advantage against the Philistines.

Saul, the first king of Israel from about 1050 to 1010 BC, sought to gain an advantage over the Philistines, a people who inhabited the coastal regions of Canaan to the southwest of Israel, near the Mediterranean Sea. In this moment of urgency, Then Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and take spoil among them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them.” And they said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” So the priest said, “Let us draw near to God here.” (v.36). Saul’s plan was bold and perhaps even aggressive, as he intended to continue the pursuit of his enemies under the cover of darkness, showing the depth of his determination to secure victory.

The priest’s response, “Let us draw near to God here” (v.36), highlights a crucial theme for Israel’s leadership: no matter how pressing the timeframe or how strong the military strategy might appear, spiritual discernment remained essential. Saul’s urgency mirrors our own tendencies to move forward with plans quickly, yet this verse reminds believers of the vital need to consult the Lord. Although Saul’s words indicate a strong desire to “not leave a man” of the Philistines, the priest urges the king and the people to pause and seek divine guidance, a principle echoed in the New Testament when Jesus taught His followers to seek God’s will first (Matthew 6:10).

Historically, Israel’s battles against the Philistines formed a significant portion of Saul’s reign. This verse depicts a pivotal moment when earthly leaders needed to remember that spiritual consultation should never be overlooked. In the broader narrative, Saul’s willingness to listen to the priest at this juncture contrasts with later instances of disobedience. Here, however, he appears open to seeking God’s counsel to ensure that his campaign remains aligned with the divine will.
