1 Samuel 22:18 meaning

Saul’s command to Doeg to kill the priests at Nob reveals the king’s deepening paranoia, resulting in a catastrophic injustice against God’s servants.

King Saul reigned as Israel’s first king from approximately 1050 to 1010 BC. In this verse, Saul commands Doeg the Edomite, a man from the region of Edom located south of the Dead Sea, to carry out a brutal act against the priests who served at Nob, a city near Jerusalem where a community of priests and their families resided. According to the text, we see this terrible moment when “Then the king said to Doeg, ‘You turn around and attack the priests.’ And Doeg the Edomite turned around and attacked the priests, and he killed that day eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.” (v.18). This vicious attack occurred because Saul believed the priests had conspired with David, who was in hiding from Saul’s wrath.

We observe in the verse how Saul gives the order and Doeg immediately complies. The mention of “eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod” (v.18) underscores the gravity of the crime, as these were priests specifically set apart for local and national worship practices. Doeg’s swift and merciless obedience highlights the fear and desperation that had taken hold of Saul’s court. Saul’s paranoia against David and anyone perceived to assist him caused a tragic shedding of innocent blood. This destructive turn in Saul’s reign foreshadows his own eventual downfall, aligning with the biblical theme that God’s hand of protection rests on whom He chooses, as ultimately seen in David’s life (1 Samuel 24:6).

In the New Testament, Jesus warns His followers that those who serve God may suffer persecution (Matthew 5:11), and the account of these priests serves as a somber example of such reality long before Christ’s earthly ministry. Just as Doeg’s actions here were driven by fear and power-seeking, so too are many injustices carried out throughout history against the faithful.
