1 Samuel 23:24 meaning

David flees to the wilderness, but God remains his refuge and strength, even in the driest realms.

“Then they arose and went to Ziph before Saul. Now David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah to the south of Jeshimon.” (v.24) This verse tells us that those loyal to Saul quickly moved toward Ziph, a region located in the southern part of ancient Judah. Ziph lay in a rugged, desert-like area, marked by rocky terrain and sparse vegetation, which made it challenging territory for travelers. Meanwhile, David, who lived around 1010-970 BC, was hiding in the wilderness of Maon—a location even further into the territory southeast of Ziph, near the Arabah, a valley region that runs north-south along the eastern edge of the Judean wilderness. The mention of “the Arabah to the south of Jeshimon” indicates an even harsher environment with little refuge, demonstrating David’s desperate situation as he fled Saul’s hostility.

“Then they arose and went to Ziph before Saul. Now David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah to the south of Jeshimon.” (v.24) also highlights the constant threat David faced at this time. Saul, the first anointed king of Israel (circa 1050-1010 BC), was actively pursuing David. Their conflict foreshadows David’s future kingship over Israel and hints at God’s protective hand in David’s life (see also Psalm 54 for David’s prayer during a related crisis). Even in such barren landscapes, God provides guidance and rescue, foreshadowing the deliverance theme closely tied to the life of Jesus centuries later (Luke 1:69).

“Then they arose and went to Ziph before Saul. Now David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah to the south of Jeshimon.” (v.24) serves as a reminder that places of desolation can become platforms for spiritual trust. David’s time in these harsh conditions devotionally prepared him for the future tasks God had in store. He learned courage, reliance on divine provision, and perseverance, all of which are virtues that believers today are encouraged to emulate (James 1:2-4).
