2 Kings 9:32 meaning

This verse reminds us that God can raise up leaders to fulfill His sovereign plan and that earthly power ultimately submits to divine will.

When Jehu arrived at Jezebel’s dwelling in Jezreel, he called out from below the window, and Scripture says: “Then he lifted up his face to the window and said, ‘Who is on my side? Who?’ And two or three officials looked down at him” (v.32). These words capture the pivotal moment in which Jehu demands loyalty, seeking confirmation of who among Jezebel’s household would stand with him in his divinely appointed mission to cleanse Israel of its idolatrous past. His inquiry demonstrates a shift of power in Israel’s northern kingdom around 841 BC, when Jehu had been anointed as king to replace the lineage of Ahab and Jezebel. Jezreel, located in the fertile valley between the hills of Galilee and Samaria, served as a strategic vantage point and a royal city where much of Israel’s political drama unfolded.

Jezebel, wife of King Ahab (who reigned from approximately 874 BC to 853 BC), had been instrumental in leading Israel into the worship of Baal. Jehu’s stance fulfilled the prophecies spoken by the prophets Elijah and Elisha, showing that God holds earthly rulers accountable for leading His people astray (see also 1 Kings 21:17-24). By calling out, “Who is on my side? Who?” (v.32), Jehu confronted not only Jezebel’s idolatrous influence but also prompted immediate action from those within her palace. The mention that “two or three officials looked down at him” indicates that several in Jezebel’s own entourage chose to heed Jehu’s authority, illustrating God’s power to sway the hearts of individuals to fulfill His purposes. The New Testament echoes the theme of divine judgment on pride and idolatry (James 4:6), affirming that submission to God leads to spiritual victory over evil.
