Isaiah 66:2 meaning

God, the all-powerful Creator, delights in a humble heart.

“For My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares the LORD.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.”
(v.2)

Through the prophet Isaiah (who ministered in the 8th century BC, around 740-681 BC), God declares that He is the Creator of everything—“For My hand made all these things, Thus all these things came into being (v.2). This demonstrates the LORD’s complete sovereignty over the universe, similar to how Amos 9:5 portrays God as the One who “calls for the waters of the sea” and rules over all creation, underscoring His absolute authority and power. Because He formed the heavens and the earth, He is worthy of reverence. Nothing in existence lies outside His careful provision and design.

Having established His power, the verse reveals the heart of God: He chooses to look upon him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word (v.2). True greatness in God’s eyes is not found in outward achievements or displays of strength; instead, it is seen in a spirit that recognizes its dependence on Him. In the New Testament, Jesus echoes this idea when He blesses the “poor in spirit,” assuring them that “the kingdom of heaven” is theirs (Matthew 5:3). The essence of a contrite spirit is having a repentant, teachable heart that longs for God’s fellowship and obeys His Word.

Humility and reverence form the core of our relationship with God, for it is to the meek soul that He draws near. This posture of the heart acknowledges that only the Creator can fill our deepest needs and heal our brokenness. God’s promise rings clear: He is eager to dwell with those who set aside pride, revere His commandments, and trust in His sustaining power.
