Joshua 22:7 meaning

God faithfully provided for both halves of Manasseh, reflecting His abundant grace to fulfill His promises for every tribe.

Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua gave a possession among their brothers westward across the Jordan. So when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them. (v.7)

In this verse, we see that Moses (circa 1526-1406 BC) had previously allotted land east of the Jordan River to half the tribe of Manasseh, in the region known as Bashan. This area included fertile plains and rolling highlands. The other half of Manasseh received their inheritance west of the Jordan through Joshua (circa 1450-1370 BC), Moses’ successor. By granting territories on both sides of the Jordan, Israel’s leadership ensured that God’s covenant people, even within a single tribe, would share in the promise of the land in diverse regions.

The final scene here pictures Joshua, after distributing the inheritance, lovingly sending the Transjordan tribes back to their own tents with a blessing. His act of blessing underscores the unity of the nation despite their varied territories. It also shows Joshua’s leadership style—he carried forward Moses’ work faithfully but did so in a manner that promoted peace and harmony within all of Israel.
