Leviticus 25:55 meaning

God purchased their freedom through His mighty acts.

“For the sons of Israel are My servants; they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God” (v.55) reveals the LORD’s declaration of ownership and authority over the Israelites. The phrase “the sons of Israel are My servants” emphasizes that they do not truly belong to any human master, but to God who created and chose them for His own purpose. This calling is rooted in the LORD’s covenant with them, which was uniquely established when He delivered them from bondage. The mention of “the land of Egypt” refers to the region in Northeastern Africa, a powerful ancient civilization that held the Hebrews in slavery until their deliverance around 1446 BC. By pointing to their historical release from captivity, the text underscores that God’s sovereignty and love have a practical outworking in their national story.

Furthermore, the statement “I am the LORD your God” underlines the relationship dynamic: God is the ultimate authority, and His people find their identity in Him. They owe Him their devotion and obedience because He set them free, shaping them into a nation for His name. Throughout Israel’s timeline, from Abraham (around 2000 BC) to Moses’ leadership (circa 15th century BC), the LORD persistently identifies Himself as the one who hears His people’s cries and rescues them (Exodus 3). In the New Testament era, believers likewise see that Jesus Christ fulfilled complete deliverance from sin for all who follow Him (Romans 8:2), mirroring this theme of God’s salvation and ownership of His people.

Since the Israelites belong to the LORD, they are called to live in light of His provisions, His laws, and His steadfast protection. This verse heightens the theme of divine ownership that resonates with other biblical passages, where God’s people are reminded to honor the One who bought them with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20). In essence, any earthly relationships or systems of servitude are secondary to the Israelites’ position as servants of Yahweh. They are to remember the redemptive events of their history whenever they consider their daily walk and how they treat one another.
