Mark 5:13 meaning

Jesus demonstrates His sovereignty over darkness, revealing that no force—even a legion of demons—can withstand Him.

“Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.” (v.13)

In this scene, Jesus exercises His authority by allowing the unclean spirits to depart from the possessed man and enter into a large herd of pigs. The location of this event is traditionally associated with the region of the Gerasenes or Gadarenes near the Sea of Galilee. This area, east of the water, was part of the Decapolis—ten Hellenistic cities that dotted the landscape and had a blend of Jewish and Gentile populations. The geography with its steep slopes made it possible for a herd to enter the sea quickly.

The verse highlights the complete dominion of Jesus over the spiritual realm: demons must request His consent, and a staggering number of possessed pigs plunge to their doom. The display of power offers a vivid illustration of Christ’s capacity to liberate people from spiritual bondage. The dramatic drowning of two thousand swine underscores both the immensity of the evil tormenting the man and the immeasurable authority of the Savior who mercifully delivered him.
