Numbers 26:24 meaning

This verse highlights the detailed care God shows toward each tribe, reaffirming His faithfulness and calling Israel to move forward in unity.

In the book of Numbers, Moses recounts the second census of Israel, taken near the end of the nation’s forty years of wandering, to identify and organize the tribes before entering the Promised Land. In describing the tribe of Issachar, the text reads, Of Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites (v.24). This listing connects back to Issachar’s lineage (Genesis 46:13), showing that each sub-family would play a role in the inheritance and governance within Israel. By specifying these groups, the Scriptures emphasize God’s detailed awareness and stewardship of every part of His covenant community.

Structurally, this verse continues the pattern of cataloging each clan, reflecting the importance of heritage and identity. As Moses and the Israelites prepared to move forward, these genealogical records assured them that they were still under God’s guiding hand, despite past failures in the wilderness. Each household would soon take its rightful place in the land the Lord had promised centuries earlier to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Beyond these tribal names rests a deep theological reminder that the Lord remains faithful to His people, knitting them together generation by generation.

As the New Testament later reveals (Romans 15:4), tracing our spiritual heritage reminds us that, in Christ, God likewise welcomes us into a new family, known and named according to His saving purpose.
