Numbers 32:36 meaning

They built strong cities for protection and provided for their livestock to ensure a stable and prosperous future.

Numbers 32:36 describes part of the settlement process for the tribes of Reuben and Gad as they took possession of lands east of the Jordan River. They specifically built up key locations to secure their homes and livelihoods. The verse explains, “and Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and sheepfolds for sheep.” (v.36) The mention of “fortified cities” indicates the tribe’s commitment to defending their territory, while the “sheepfolds for sheep” highlight the pastoral economy that sustained them. Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran were strategically located in the Transjordan region, east of the Jordan River, an area known for its fertile soil and ample grazing land. Found in what is now modern-day Jordan, this region was often contested throughout biblical history due to its resources, emphasizing why the tribes found it necessary to reinforce their cities.

Historically, these events took place near the end of Moses’ life, around the late 15th century BC (approximately 1406 BC). Moses (circa 1526-1406 BC), who led the Israelites out of Egypt and through the desert wanderings, oversaw the allocation of these lands to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. This allotment is part of a broader plan that allowed Israel to occupy and settle the territory God had promised them. By building fortified cities such as Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, the Reubenites and Gadites could protect their families and livestock, demonstrating responsibility for both their immediate needs and their long-term heritage. Their diligent preparations echo Jesus’ exhortation to care for one’s household and provisions (John 10:10), emphasizing the importance of responsible stewardship and provision for those entrusted to us.
