Psalms 104:6 meaning

God’s complete mastery over creation assures us that whatever seems insurmountable in our lives is ultimately subject to His sovereign hand.

“You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters were standing above the mountains.” (v.6)

In this psalm, the writer poetically highlights God’s dominion over the earth by describing how He wrapped the land in ocean-like depths. The imagery of standing waters above the mountains conveys the boundless magnitude of His might, recalling how the earth’s highest places are nothing compared to the vastness of the Creator’s power. Although Psalm 104 does not explicitly name its author, many believe it reflects the praises of an ancient Israelite poet who marveled at God’s sovereignty in both creation and history.

When the psalm says God clothed the land so fully that “the waters were standing above the mountains,” it resonates with the universal Flood recorded in Genesis, a time when every peak was submerged under the immense force of divine judgment (Genesis 7:19). Other scriptural passages, such as 2 Peter 3:5-6, also refer to this global deluge that overrode every barrier on the earth, underscoring God’s authority over even the most formidable heights. The entire flow of water and the depths point toward the majestic power of a Creator who can both sustain and reshape the globe at His will. Psalm 104:5-9 is often cited alongside these Flood accounts, illustrating the comprehensive nature of God’s rule over His creation.

This sweeping illustration of waters over mountains reminds believers that God’s purposes cannot be thwarted by any measure of earthly greatness. It looks forward to how Jesus, through whom all things came into being (John 1:3), still wields infinite authority over every realm, whether stormy seas or towering hills (Mark 4:39). That same creative and redemptive power offers confidence to those who place their faith in Him, knowing that the One who can drape the earth in ocean depths can also uphold and deliver His people.
