Psalms 105:28 meaning

God’s sovereign authority over creation is absolute, and His purposes stand firm despite any resistance.

“He sent darkness and made it dark; And they did not rebel against His words.” (v. 28)

This verse describes the LORD’s sovereign power to command nature itself, a reminder of the plague of darkness that He brought upon Egypt in Exodus 10:21-23. By sending darkness over the land, He demonstrated His unhindered authority to judge oppressive forces and to rescue His people, fulfilling His promises without fail. The psalmist includes this astonishing act in a larger list of wonders, calling on believers to remember God’s mighty hand in history, just as other passages beckon the faithful to recall His deeds (Deuteronomy 6:12, Psalm 105:5).

God’s total command over the created order underscores that even the most fearsome events—like a sudden darkness—are subject to His Word. The verse also testifies that those who align themselves with God’s purposes will not resist His decrees but will see His justice and mercy poured out in unique ways. Throughout Scripture, light and darkness often symbolize God’s perfect guidance and mankind’s moral or spiritual blindness (John 1:5). Here, the LORD chooses darkness as a tool to accomplish His will.

From a New Testament perspective, Jesus proclaims Himself to be the light of the world (John 8:12). This gospel truth provides a hopeful contrast to the physical darkness God once used to humble Pharaoh. Even as the LORD’s power can overshadow and judge, He also offers the guiding radiance of Christ, leading souls out of spiritual darkness and into the brightness of life in Him.
