Psalms 106:10 meaning

God faithfully rescues those He loves, providing both physical deliverance and spiritual restoration.

When the psalmist proclaims, “So He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy” (v.10), it illustrates the LORD’s active rescue of the Israelites from their Egyptian oppressors. Culturally and historically, the ancient Egyptians under Pharaoh (who likely reigned around the mid-15th century BC) had enslaved the Israelites for centuries. Then Moses, who lived roughly between 1526 to 1406 BC, was called by God to deliver his people from captivity. Psalm 106:10 celebrates the moment described in Exodus when the LORD parted the Red Sea so that Israel could pass on dry land and then caused the waters to crash back upon the Egyptians, making it clear that the salvation of Israel and the destruction of Egypt’s army were both completely the LORD’s work.

The phrase redeemed them from the hand of the enemy tells us that this divine act was not merely a display of power but a loving intervention. In the broader biblical narrative, to redeem involves “buying back” or rescuing someone from dire circumstances. Here, the Israelites were delivered from an utterly hopeless situation, cementing the LORD’s reputation as a faithful covenant keeper. Despite the fact that the text does not explicitly state whether Pharaoh himself was killed in the Red Sea, the record affirms that the Egyptian army suffered total defeat, further underscoring the completeness of God’s triumph.

In Psalm 106, this dramatic rescue is highlighted to remind readers of God’s overflowing mercy despite Israel’s own failings. Over and over, they forgot His works, yet He still chose to spare His chosen people. This verse is an anchor for every believer who looks to God’s past faithfulness as a guarantee of His present and future help, pointing forward to the ultimate spiritual redemption that Christ offers (John 3:16).
