Psalms 106:25 meaning

They grumbled in self-pity and lost sight of the blessings that lay ahead.

“But grumbled in their tents; They did not listen to the voice of the LORD.” (v.25) encapsulates a moment of Israel’s stubbornness and lack of faith in God’s deliverance. This verse follows a pattern in Psalm 106 of remembering how the people repeatedly forgot the LORD’s works and opted instead for complaining hearts. The setting points back to the period after Israel’s exodus from Egypt (c. 1446 B.C.), when the Israelites wandered in the wilderness under Moses’s leadership. Rather than trusting the LORD’s guidance and showing gratitude for His provision, Israel “grumbled in their tents” and closed their ears to divine instruction.

By stating They did not listen to the voice of the LORD, the psalmist highlights not only a refusal to obey, but a deeper issue of unbelief and disregard for God’s authority. In the broader context of Psalm 106, the verse is part of a lament describing Israel’s repeated cycles of deliverance and rebellion. Although God tirelessly demonstrated His faithfulness—parting seas, providing daily sustenance, and giving them a covenant to follow—Israel’s response here is marked by discontent and mistrust. Their refusal to listen became symptomatic of a heart attitude that valued personal comfort over grateful submission to God’s commands.
