Psalms 147:5 meaning

God’s limitless strength and infinite wisdom are the ultimate assurance for those who place their trust in Him.

“Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite.” (v.5) declares the matchless power and wisdom of God. The psalmist uses poetic language to emphasize the Lord’s absolute supremacy over all creation. Nothing and no one can compare to the might of the Almighty, who sets the stars in place and knows them all by name earlier in this psalm. His abundant strength cascades over the visible and invisible realms, revealing His lordship in every aspect of the world. The psalmist makes it clear that God’s reach is not limited to national borders or confined to a singular people group; rather, His boundless might extends across every nation and generation for all time.

Alongside His overwhelming might comes a depth of understanding that is beyond human comprehension. “His understanding is infinite.” (v.5) shares the consistent biblical theme that God’s thoughts are higher than our own (see Isaiah 55:8-9). This infinite, divine insight provides comfort for believers in every circumstance, because the God who has no limits to His strength also has infinite wisdom to guide and protect His creation. While earthly wisdom may fail, God’s perspective never falters or diminishes.

In light of the New Testament, Jesus embodies God’s boundless understanding and power. He performs miracles (such as in Matthew 14:14-21), showing that no problem or obstacle exceeds His divine capacity. Jesus also demonstrates compassion, reflecting the Father’s grace that flows from a heart of infinite wisdom. By entrusting our cares to Christ, we share in the indescribable greatness of God, whose omniscience works for our ultimate good (Romans 8:28).
