Psalms 93:4 meaning

God’s mighty power surpasses every other force in creation.

As the psalmist proclaims, More than the sounds of many waters, Than the mighty breakers of the sea, The LORD on high is mighty (v.4), the vast, overwhelming power of the sea becomes a symbol of God’s unmatched sovereignty. Throughout Scripture, the LORD is often pictured as ruling over all creation with supreme authority. In referencing Psalm 93:1, one commentary highlights that “He is clothed with majesty. The LORD has clothed and girded Himself with strength,” emphasizing His boundless might and dominion over every destructive force. Here in Psalm 93:4, those “mighty breakers” vividly demonstrate that no earthly power can stand against Him.

Just as God can still the wind and raging sea, so too can He bring order and peace into any stormy situation. Elsewhere in the Old Testament, the Bible affirms He is the master of the whirlwind, enforcing His reign by calming the waters or overwhelming His enemies with floods (Exodus 14:26-28). In the Gospels, Jesus likewise demonstrates this divine trait when He rebukes the wind and waves, prompting those with Him to ask, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:41). Such accounts show that the same God who formed the oceans also rules them without challenge or opposition.

Because the LORD reigns from on high, believers can take comfort that God’s authority surpasses that of any threatening “breakers” in our lives. He is steadfast, reigning forever, and sustains His covenant people with unshakeable strength. No matter how tumultuous the circumstances, the psalmist joyfully reminds us that God’s majesty will never be swept away by the waves.
