Psalms 95:5 meaning

God created everything, and we belong to Him.

The psalmist declares, “The sea is His, for it was He who made it, and His hands formed the dry land” (v.5). In naming the vast sea and solid ground, this verse highlights God’s creative power over all regions of the earth. He is not only the One who shaped the dry land, but also the One who fashioned the depths of ocean waters. This bold statement of God’s handiwork calls people to posture themselves in awe-filled worship toward the divine Creator who holds absolute authority over the entire physical world. It reminds us that the elements and landmasses we so often take for granted would not exist without the Lord’s extraordinary acts. According to John 1:3, “All things came into being through Him,” which gives even more support to this truth that God is the source of all.

By pointing to God’s creation of the sea and land, the psalmist also gives assurance that the earth and ocean, no matter how intimidating or sublime they may seem, belong to God. He is intimately involved in every corner of the planet because His hand tirelessly shaped it. This reality demonstrates His power is limitless; just as He molded the driest desert and the most fertile valley, He also set in place the wave-lapped coastlines and mysterious depths. The reminder that the “sea is His” (v.5) can encourage believers that the same God who created all these wonders is ever-present, reigning sovereignly over all circumstances we might face.

In the broader context, Psalm 95 calls for sincere praise and reverence. Verse 5 emphasizes the foundational reason we worship God—He is worthy simply because He made everything, and He holds His creation in His hand. This line of thought ties powerfully into the New Testament, where Jesus Christ is also exalted as the One through whom all things were made (Colossians 1:16). As we meditate on God’s creative might displayed in Psalm 95:5, we deepen our understanding of His unmatched authority and love for His creation.
