1 Chronicles 24:20 meaning

1 Chronicles 24:20 highlights the orderly arrangement and sacred heritage of Levi’s descendants as they carried on essential priestly duties.

“Now for the rest of the sons of Levi: of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah.” (v. 20). This verse in 1 Chronicles 24, which catalogues the genealogies and priestly orders of Levi’s descendants, highlights how the Chronicler carefully recorded the lineage of those who would serve in the temple. Levi was the third son of Jacob (around the 17th century BC), and his tribe was set apart by God to oversee religious duties (Numbers 3:7). By the time of the monarchy, these priests and Levites, including Amram’s lineage, were officially organized for their sacred tasks (see also 1 Chronicles as a retelling of Israel’s history after exile).

The name Amram is significant because he was the father of Moses and Aaron, who lived around the 15th-14th centuries BC (Numbers 3:17-20). In this particular verse, we see the mention of Shubael and his descendant Jehdeiah, emphasizing how care was taken not only to trace the primary Levitical families—like those of Moses and Aaron—but also to identify many of the extended familial lines entrusted with caring for the temple. These records underscored the importance of faithfully preserving the worship of the LORD through assigned priestly roles, an arrangement carried forward into later generations (Numbers 3:38-39).

This verse underscores God’s design for organized worship by detailing the continuation of the Levite line in service to Him.
