1 Kings 1:11 meaning

Solomon was the rightful heir, and Nathan’s warning to Bathsheba in 1 Kings 1:11 set in motion the course that would secure his throne.

Nathan, a loyal prophet of the Lord and confidant of King David, takes urgent action when he (“spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, ‘Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it?’”) (v.11). In Israel’s history, Nathan stands alongside David as a trusted counselor, instrumental in guiding and correcting the king (2 Samuel 12:7-9). Here, he swiftly alerts Bathsheba that Adonijah, one of David’s sons, has presumed the throne without David’s knowledge or blessing. This exchange takes place in Jerusalem, the capital city of David’s kingdom, roughly in 971-970 BC, when King David’s reign is nearing its end. Bathsheba, by this time, is well-known as the mother of Solomon, who would become Israel’s next God-appointed king (1 Kings 2:12).

By referring to Bathsheba specifically as “the mother of Solomon” (v.11), the Scripture reminds the reader that Solomon is David’s rightful successor, indicated by God’s earlier promise. Bathsheba herself played a crucial role in the royal lineage that would eventually lead to Jesus Christ, fulfilling God’s covenant promise to establish David’s line forever (2 Samuel 7:13, Matthew 1:6). Historically, Solomon reigned from approximately 970-931 BC. Nathan, acting as both God’s messenger and a political advisor, recognizes that Adonijah’s hasty attempt at kingship threatens the divinely ordained plan for Solomon to be king.

The mention of Adonijah, “the son of Haggith” (v.11), underscores the potential conflict within David’s household. Adonijah was an older son of David who assumed he could step into his father’s place without adhering to God’s will or his father’s wishes. Nathan’s urgency and Bathsheba’s involvement demonstrate the fragility of the succession process and highlight their steadfast faith that God’s promise would be fulfilled through Solomon. Their response ensures the preservation of David’s line, pointing forward to the ultimate fulfillment found in the lineage of Christ (Luke 3:31-32).
