1 Kings 4:25 meaning

All Israel enjoyed unparalleled peace and prosperity throughout Solomon’s reign.

So Judah and Israel lived in safety, every man under his vine and his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon (1 Kings 4:25). This picture of security highlights the flourishing peace that prevailed during King Solomon’s reign, which lasted from approximately 970 to 930 BC. Solomon, son of King David, ruled over a united Israel, and the verse emphasizes that both Judah (the southern tribe) and Israel (the northern tribes) experienced rest from conflict, and each household had the freedom and abundance to cultivate vines and figs. The phrase “under his vine and his fig tree,” used elsewhere in Scripture, symbolizes the ample provision, tranquility, and personal well-being of every individual family. The verse also notes the boundaries of this safety, stating it extended “from Dan even to Beersheba,” denoting the far northern reach of Dan down to the southern landmark of Beersheba in the northern Negev desert. This expression served as a common biblical way to signify the entire breadth of Israel’s territory. During Solomon’s kingship, the kingdom enjoyed enough stability that families could remain in their own homes without fear of invasion or want, reflecting the blessings promised to God’s covenant people when they walked in obedience to Him.

Not only does 1 Kings 4:25 remind readers of the external peace that Solomon’s leadership brought, but it also foreshadows the deeper spiritual rest God desires for His people—a rest where each person can dwell securely in God’s provision. It shows that, in times of faithful leadership and reverence toward the Lord, the nation flourished with both safety and prosperity, just as God had intended.
