1 Samuel 6:20 meaning

The people’s question in this verse reminds us that God’s unimaginable holiness requires our humble submission before Him.

The men of Beth-shemesh witness the power and holiness of the LORD as they encounter the Ark of the Covenant coming back from Philistine territory. They exclaim, “Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God? And to whom shall He go up from us?” (v.20), recognizing God’s set-apart morality and fearing the consequences of approaching Him without proper reverence. Beth-shemesh, located near the Sorek Valley in the tribe of Judah’s inheritance, sat on a strategic route where the Philistines and Israelites often interacted. By the historical timeline of approximately the late 11th century BC, this territory had changed hands or significance multiple times, but at this juncture, it served as the people’s first point of contact with the sacred Ark upon its return to Israel.

Their startled question, “Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God?” (v.20), stems from a realization that they could not treat the presence of the Ark casually. The holiness of the LORD often brings human sinfulness into sharp clarity, prompting trembling and awe Hebrews 12:28-29 for a New Testament reflection on reverence). Historically, this moment foreshadows Israel’s ongoing struggle to properly honor God’s commands regarding sacred objects and worship. Samuel, the final judge and a prophet active around 1050-1000 BC, would continue to teach Israel how to walk faithfully before the LORD.

In many ways, the gospel hope in Christ highlights how believers can at last “draw near with confidence to the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16), since Jesus bridges the gap between humanity’s sin and God’s holiness. But for the men of Beth-shemesh, the Ark’s return introduced a vital lesson: God’s presence is not to be trifled with or taken lightly, and those who do not rightly fear Him find themselves questioning how they can stand before such a holy God.
