Isaiah 63:1 meaning

He is the victorious Redeemer who comes to judge wickedness and rescue the faithful.

“Who is this who comes from Edom, With garments of glowing colors from Bozrah, This One who is majestic in His apparel, Marching in the greatness of His strength? ‘It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.’” (v.1) The prophet Isaiah, who lived approximately between 740-681 BC, speaks of a figure approaching from Edom, a region located southeast of the Kingdom of Judah, corresponding to parts of modern-day southwestern Jordan. The mention of “glowing colors” from Bozrah, the capital of Edom, highlights both the vibrant and victorious appearance of this mysterious visitor. Edom is historically significant as the land of Esau, Jacob’s brother, marking it as a place often at enmity with Israel in biblical history.

When Isaiah describes “This One who is majestic in His apparel” (v.1), he points to a champion whose splendor is awe-inspiring. The question “Who is this?” emphasizes the formidable presence of the approaching figure. Given the context of salvation and redemption throughout Isaiah, many scholars interpret the verse to ultimately point forward to the Messiah, fulfilled in the New Testament by Jesus (Revelation 19:13-16). The reference to “marching in the greatness of His strength” (v.1) underscores the unstoppable might that accompanies righteous judgment—a recurring theme seen in God’s deliverance of His people.

The declaration “It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save” (v.1) reveals this figure as not only powerful but also just. Speaking “in righteousness” connects to the divine attribute of holiness, indicating He judges sin and delivers the faithful. This ties consistently with Jesus Christ’s role as the ultimate Redeemer and Savior for humanity (John 3:17), who possesses both the authority and love to rescue the lost. Isaiah conveys a message of consolation, reminding God’s people that He is the righteous warrior who intervenes on behalf of those who trust in Him.
