Job 25:2 meaning

God’s dominion assures us that our turbulent lives can be held secure under His unshakable reign.

Bildad the Shuhite, one of Job’s friends, describes God’s majesty when he declares, "Dominion and awe belong to Him Who establishes peace in His heights." (v.2) In the ancient setting of the land of Uz—a region possibly located east of the Jordan River or near Edom around 2000 to 1800 BC—these words highlight the gravity of recognizing God’s control over every realm. Just as Bildad lived during a period often associated with the patriarchs, his understanding of God’s rule comes from a time when people keenly observed the power of nature and the might of kingdoms, and attributed both to the Author of all life.

When Bildad says, "Dominion and awe belong to Him…" (v.2), he affirms that every sphere, from earthly realms to heavenly heights, falls under the authority of the Almighty. The term “dominion” conveys absolute power, and “awe” reflects the reverential fear and respect that come from witnessing God’s greatness. This guiding principle resonates throughout Scripture, ultimately finding its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who is described as the One “through whom all things were made” (John 1:3) and whose reign brings genuine peace to those who trust in Him (John 14:27).

The closing phrase, "Who establishes peace in His heights" (v.2), reminds us that God is not merely a powerful force, but also the source of genuine tranquility. Even from the glory of His heavenly authority, He chooses to extend His peace to His creation—a peace that can only flow from a realm unshaken by earthly turmoil. This echoes through the New Testament, where peace is personified in Christ’s redemptive work, inviting believers to dwell under His serene dominion (Colossians 1:20).
