Numbers 33:20 meaning

God moves His people from one place to another to shape, refine, and prepare them for His promises.

In this passage, we read of the movement of God’s chosen people through the wilderness as “They journeyed from Rimmon-perez and camped in Libnah.” (Numbers 33:20). The children of Israel, led by Moses—who is traditionally dated to around the 15th century BC (some scholars place the Exodus at approximately 1446 BC)—continued their divinely guided progress toward the Promised Land. Rimmon-perez, where they had previously been encamped, served as a signpost of God’s provision even in the most barren desert circumstances. Setting out from there, they arrived at Libnah, marking another step in their decades-long journey through adversity and dependence on the LORD.

This brief verse, “They journeyed from Rimmon-perez and camped in Libnah,” (Numbers 33:20) signals more than geography; it highlights the people’s expectancy of God’s unbroken commitment. Libnah, whose name may imply a place of whiteness or transparency, could have been a small wilderness station or a site near the southwestern borders of Canaan. Although its exact location can be difficult to pinpoint with modern maps, the significance remains: each camp demonstrated that the Israelites were continually moving under God’s watchful hand. This can also remind New Testament believers of how Jesus guides His Church step by step (John 10:27), providing direction through every stage of life.

By reflecting on “They journeyed from Rimmon-perez and camped in Libnah,” (Numbers 33:20), we see how God’s faithfulness enveloped His people throughout their entire journey. Moses, a pivotal figure who received the Ten Commandments (around 1446 BC during the early wilderness year), stands at the center of their leadership, reminding them—and us—that God’s guiding presence is never far. Just as each camp gave the Israelites a moment’s rest and an opportunity to trust God’s timing, so every new season in our lives can be met with faith, hope, and a renewed commitment to follow His leading.
