Psalms 119:142 meaning

God’s eternal righteousness and truth are the bedrock of a life of faith.

“Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth.” (v.142) In this portion of Psalm 119, the psalmist affirms the enduring nature of the LORD’s righteousness. The word “everlasting” emphasizes that God’s righteousness exists beyond the constraints of time or shifting circumstances. He is not merely a just God in a single moment, but rather One whose moral uprightness remains steady across all generations. The psalmist’s focus on divine righteousness leads us to reflect on our own standards of right and wrong in comparison to the eternal standard set by God. This universal truth is repeated throughout Scripture, reminding believers that the LORD’s ways never expire or fade (Romans 1:17).

“Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth.” (v.142) also points to the reliability of God’s commandments. In this verse, “law” refers to God’s instructions and moral guidelines given to His people. Based on the psalmist’s words, God’s law is not simply a set of flexible rules, but truth itself. In the Bible, Jesus personifies this consistent truth by fulfilling the law and by embodying it fully (Matthew 5:17). Through these words, the psalmist shows how God’s righteous instruction helps believers navigate a world of changing moral views, keeping them on a path aligned with the Creator’s will.

“Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth.” (v.142) further underscores that the LORD’s truth does not bend to cultural shifts or human desires. The psalmist proclaims God’s law to be certain and sure, forming a firm foundation for righteous living. This security offers believers confidence, knowing that their faith is rooted in a perfect and unchanging standard. Such reliability extends beyond ancient Israel into our modern lives, offering hope and clarity in an ever-changing world (Hebrews 13:8).
