Psalms 124:6 meaning

God alone sustains and rescues His people from destruction.

“Blessed be the LORD, Who has not given us to be torn by their teeth.” (v.6) This verse stands out as an expression of heartfelt gratitude to the Lord for His active protection. The Psalmist credits God alone for preventing the looming destruction that was so close at hand, likening the danger to being devoured by an enemy’s predatory jaws. Traditionally, this Psalm is attributed to King David, who reigned from about 1010 to 970 BC, a time in Israel’s history when battles and threats were frequent. Hence, proclaiming “Blessed be the LORD” is a declaration that Israel does not stand on its own merit or military might, but rather on the steadfast and saving power of God.

In the culture of ancient Israel, imagery of being torn by teeth powerfully conveyed a sense of overwhelming danger. By using such vivid language, the Psalmist shows that deliverance from the Lord is not mere good fortune, but an unmistakable intervention. Much like a sheep rescued from a predator, the people of God acknowledge they have been spared from what seemed like certain defeat. This cry of praise teaches that when threats appear overwhelming, it is God’s benevolent hand that hinders the enemy and preserves life (see also Romans 8:31).

Spiritually, this verse points to God’s nature as a faithful protector, foreshadowing the New Testament’s emphasis on Jesus as Savior who rescues humanity from the dangers of sin and spiritual death (John 10:11). Despite precarious times for the nation, God’s plan of salvation persisted, culminating in Jesus Christ centuries later. For New Testament believers, Psalm 124:6 resonates as a reminder that God’s deliverance is both a historical reality in Israel’s past and a present truth for those who trust in Him.
