Psalms 135:6 meaning

God’s authority over the entire creation is a source of profound comfort.

“Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.” (v.6) This verse boldly proclaims God’s absolute sovereignty over every realm of creation. The psalmist depicts that there is no boundary to the scope of the LORD’s authority, whether in the highest heavens or in the hidden mysteries of the deep seas. This underscores that every aspect of the created order functions under the will and pleasure of God. In the Old Testament, the idea of His boundless authority is often connected with His power over nature, as seen in His command of the winds and waves (Psalm 107:29) and further emphasized in the New Testament when Jesus calms the storm (Mark 4:39).

“Whatever the LORD pleases, He does” (v.6) also suggests that God’s actions are always in alignment with His perfect character and His purposes. God is not erratic or impulsive, but rather His sovereignty flows out of His righteousness and love. This reveals a God who is not only able to act but also orchestrates events in alignment with His divine plan. His plan is ultimately redemptive and finds its fulfillment in Christ, as the New Testament reveals God’s purpose to reconcile all things to Himself (Colossians 1:20).

“…In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.” (v.6) indicates that there is no location far enough to avoid the presence and power of the LORD. The “seas” and “all deeps” highlight regions often seen as mysterious or chaotic, yet even there, God reigns supreme. This is a reminder that no matter what depths or unknowns His people may face, God’s authority is all-encompassing, and He wields it for His ultimate will and purpose.
