Psalms 71:14 meaning

God calls us to keep praising Him constantly, with unwavering hope in His faithfulness.

But as for me, I will hope continually, And will praise You yet more and more. (v.14) offers a deeply personal statement of devotion and perseverance. The psalmist speaks of an unwavering determination to cling to hope in the LORD, regardless of life’s circumstances. This hope signifies more than mere optimism; it is a confident expectation anchored in God’s steadfast love. The phrase “continually” points to an ongoing commitment, as if the psalmist’s life is shaped by the rhythm of placing trust in the Lord day by day. This continual hope resonates with the New Testament emphasis on enduring faith and persistence in worship (Luke 18:1), showing that believers are called to tenaciously hold on to the promises of God.

When the psalmist declares, “And will praise You yet more and more,” (v.14) it paints a beautiful image of increasing worship. Rather than diminishing over time, the psalmist’s praise grows with each passing season—a powerful reminder that our adoration for the Divine can deepen as we witness more of His faithfulness. Praising God “more and more” expresses a transformation that occurs from within, leading the heart to overflow with sincere gratitude. The apostle Paul spoke of abounding in hope “by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13), suggesting that this upward progression of praise and trust is fueled by God’s active work in the lives of His people.

Psalm 71 as a whole is often read as an older believer’s prayer who looks back on a lifetime of God’s deliverance, but verse 14 highlights a forward-looking stance. Rather than dwelling on past triumphs alone, the psalmist pledges to push forward in continuous hope and unceasing praise. This kind of forward-looking faith can remind us of Jesus’ call for us to persist in seeking, knocking, and asking (Matthew 7:7), believing that God will meet us in our daily needs and joys. The psalmist’s unwavering hope and deepening praise demonstrate a reliance on the One whose mercy and strength never fail.
