Psalms 78:35 meaning

God is the steadfast foundation and rescuer of His people.

When we read “And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer” (v.35), we discover that the children of Israel reached a critical point of recollection. They recalled that the LORD, the covenant God of Israel, was not merely a distant deity but the foundational “rock” upon which their whole identity rested. In ancient times, a rock signified permanence and an unmovable stronghold (Psalm 18:2). By calling God their “rock,” they acknowledged that He alone was the unshakable source of security and steadfastness in their lives.

Additionally, when they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer (v.35), they recognized the LORD as not just a place of safety but also their Rescuer. The word “Redeemer” indicates that God intervenes to buy back or deliver His people from their dire circumstances. This theme of God being a redeeming presence connects strongly to the New Testament depiction of Jesus, who serves as the Redeemer for humanity (1 Peter 1:18-19). Such a realization would have called the Israelites to trust the LORD’s redemptive power, turning away from their persistent disobedience.

In recalling God as their rock and Redeemer (v.35), the psalm underscores the cyclical nature of human forgetfulness and the mercy of the Almighty. Each time Israel wandered, a moment of repentance would bring them back to acknowledging that God was the ultimate source of their heritage and hope. Though they repeatedly strayed, the Lord’s grace was sufficient to restore them when they turned to Him, laying the groundwork for future reminders that God’s faithfulness never fails.
