Psalms 78:71 meaning

This verse reveals God’s sovereign choice of David, showing that humble service and a faithful heart pave the way for significant spiritual leadership.

David’s humble origins are highlighted in Psalm 78:71, which says “From the care of the ewes with suckling lambs He brought him To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance” (v.71). The psalmist emphasizes that God chose David, not for his political connections or noble lineage, but for his faithfulness in tending sheep. In ancient Israel, shepherds were often overlooked members of society. Yet God saw David’s heart and called him out of an ordinary field, trusting him with the extraordinary task of leading God’s people. Geographically, David was from Bethlehem, located roughly five miles south of Jerusalem in the mountainous region of Judah. Bethlehem would later become renowned as the birthplace of Jesus (Luke 2:4-7).

“…He brought him To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance” (v.71) points to David’s greater role in history. “Jacob” was the name of the patriarch who lived around 2006-1859 BC; God later changed his name to Israel (Genesis 32:28). Through Jacob’s twelve sons, the tribes of Israel arose, forming the nation David was destined to lead. David reigned as king of Israel from approximately 1010 BC to 970 BC, establishing Jerusalem as the nation’s capital and uniting the tribes under one kingdom. This verse indicates that David’s humble beginning as a shepherd equipped him to protect and guide “His inheritance,” namely God’s chosen people, foreshadowing the compassionate leadership demonstrated by Jesus, the Good Shepherd (John 10:11).

By stressing the transition from caring for lambs to leading a nation, Psalm 78:71 shows how God often prepares individuals through faithful service in the smallest tasks. The skills David used to protect vulnerable sheep translated into protecting and caring for an entire kingdom. His shepherd’s heart and reliance on God made him a king after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). Moreover, David’s lineage led to Jesus Christ, who similarly came in humility and shepherds God’s people today (Matthew 1:1).
