Psalms 95:4 meaning

God holds all creation in His hand, reminding us of His unlimited power and care.

“In whose hand are the depths of the earth, The peaks of the mountains are His also.” (v.4) underscores the vast scope of God’s dominion. While no specific geographical location is named here, the verse clearly references topographical extremes: the lowest parts deep beneath the earth’s surface and the highest mountain summits. This poetic imagery portrays an exalted understanding of the LORD as holding everything in His capable hand. When the psalmist presents God as having mastery over the depths and the heights, it reflects the biblical theme of God’s sovereignty over all creation (Colossians 1:16).

By pointing to the extremes of the earth—“the depths of the earth” and “the peaks of the mountains”—the verse emphasizes no corner of creation is beyond God’s power. The ancient Hebrew understanding of the created world included both what lay beneath, often mysterious or unsearchable, and what towered above, mighty and formidable. Yet each exists under the LORD’s authority. Such a truth is meant to inspire reverence, urging believers to remember that all places and conditions are under the domain of God’s watchful care.

“In whose hand are the depths of the earth, The peaks of the mountains are His also.” (v.4) also connects themes from across the Bible that point to Jesus as the eternal Son who holds creation together (John 1:3). This Old Testament verse foreshadows the New Testament teaching that Christ, as God in the flesh, continues the Father’s sustaining work. All the hidden corners of the earth and the towering wonders of the mountains point to His majesty and remind us that confidence and faith rest in the One who holds every element of our world.
