Psalms 99:5 meaning

God’s holiness calls for reverent worship.

In Psalm 99:5, the psalmist proclaims, “Exalt the LORD our God And worship at His footstool; Holy is He” (v.5). This command urges the faithful to lift up and magnify the name of the Lord above all else—His character, power, and majesty deserve the highest praise. The image of God’s “footstool” vividly illustrates that even the most tangible aspect of God’s domain is worthy of profound reverence, calling worshipers to humbly bow before Him. This same theme resonates in other parts of Scripture, where God’s holiness sets Him apart as the ultimate authority, and calls believers into wholehearted devotion (Hebrews 12:28).

When we “Exalt the LORD our God” (v.5), we acknowledge His uniqueness and absolute moral purity. He is not merely one deity among many but the only true God whose holiness undergirds all creation. This declaration also points forward to the revelation of God in Jesus Christ, where the holiness of the Lord becomes accessible to all who believe (John 1:14). Through Christ’s sacrifice, believers are brought into God’s presence, invited to revere Him with the same awe and honor exhorted by the psalmist.
